“The Breakdown of the Atom” was written in 1937 and published as a separate book in Paris in 1938. This “existential” novella was once silenced by embarrassed and scandalized Russian circles in Paris and deservedly appreciated only by the perceptive Zinaida Gippius. Now this book is forgotten. Georgy Ivanov himself valued “The Breakdown of the Atom” very highly, and indeed it is a central, “crisis” work and a key to much of his writing.
