“Bird Market” is a new collection of short stories by famous writers, continuing the tradition of the bestsellers “Moscow: a Place to Meet” and “Living in St. Petersburg”: thirty-seven authors under one cover.
The book’s heroes are household animals: the cat of Evgeny Vodolazkin, Anna Matveyeva, Alexander Genis; Dmitry Vodennikov’s dachshund; a donkey in a story by Narine Abgaryan; a plush puppy by Lyudmila Ulitskaya; a goat by Roman Sencin; the ants of Alexey Salnikov; and not-quite-household ones: a lobster, Sebastian, whom Tatyana Tolstaya spotted in an aquarium and befriended; a fire medusa that stung Vasily Avchenko in the Amur Bay; an anaconda by Andrey Filimonov, traveling through the sewers; and a crocodile whom Ksenia Buksha interviewed… The compilers of the collection are publisher Elena Shubina and editor Alla Shlyukova. The edition is illustrated with drawings by young St. Petersburg artist Arina Obukh.
