Emelya is a long-time hero of Russian folk fairy tales, and today we present your attention a new audiobook by Viktor Shamonin (Versenev) titled “About Emelya and the Magic Pike.” It should be said that the fairy tale is perceived very easily, because it is written in verse form.

The plot begins with describing the life of a certain man who had three sons. Time passed; two sons married and began working together with their wives, but the man also had a third (younger) son—Emelya. He was very lazy, loved only to eat tasty food and sleep on the warm stove. Everyone started working hard, earning money for living, only Emelya lies on the stove and doesn’t even twitch. The father instructed Emelya to help his daughters-in-law in everything—in return, he would bring him a gift: a beautiful fur coat. The daughters-in-law went to work, and Emelya once again lay down on the stove and fell asleep. The daughters-in-law couldn’t stand it and ran up to the stove: “Go work, help us!” Emelya, half-asleep, mumbled that they should go themselves, because it’s his laziness to run into the cold. But the daughters-in-law threatened him that their father wouldn’t bring him a gift if he didn’t help them. Emelya, displeased, got down from the stove, took an axe and buckets, and ran to the ice-hole…

What happened next and how the fairy tale ended, you can listen to in our free audiobook.
