Martti Larni (1909–93), Finnish writer and journalist. A satirical novel “The Beautiful Piglet” was published almost fifty years ago. The “American Dream” stirred the imagination of many generations of the dispossessed people around the world. Rumors about a fabulously abundant country where it’s easy and quick for a shoe-shine cleaner to become a millionaire—those are tempting. Larni, with his unmatched humor, subtly mocking naive and simple-minded reverence for everything American, shows America from the inside, in contact with that very “American Dream,” and dispels illusions. A lot has changed in today’s world. However, the sparkling humor, the sharp, biting accuracy of the author’s assessments, the fearlessness of his satire are still no less interesting—and useful—for the reader. Judge for yourself.
