Description
The 1660s, England after Oliver Cromwell, with Charles II on the throne. In Oxford, the body of Dr. Grove, a don of New College, is discovered under suspicious circumstances. Sarah, who had once worked for him as a servant, is accused of the murder.
Many years later, the fate of this gifted girl with a difficult character and the circumstances of Grove’s murder are recounted to us in turn by four participants in the events. Marco da Cola—a young Venetian Catholic who arrived in England on his father’s business; James Prescot—a student at Oxford, passionately eager to restore the good name of his father, accused of treason; John Wallis—the great mathematician, cryptographer, and xenophobe; Anthony Wood—a young historian and collector of antiquities. Each tries to convince us that he is right, but which of them can be trusted? On the other hand, how much can the authors of the four Gospels be trusted? After all, each describes events as he saw or imagined them, and perhaps willingly or unwillingly sins against the truth in some way.
