Viktor Petrovich Astafyev was a famous Russian writer and a participant in the Great Patriotic War. One of his well-known works is the novella “The Shepherd and the Shepherdess,” which he called “a modern pastoral.” This story tells about heroes living in a peaceful rural setting, yet getting pulled into a terrible war.
