The hero of the novel “The Waste” — Harold Pearce — after leaving a psychiatric clinic where he spent most of his life, gets a job as a hospital orderly, where, among other duties, he has to periodically dispose of aborted human fetuses—embryos. The work becomes sheer torture for Pearce and throws him into the chaos of old nightmares: a few years ago he accidentally killed his newborn brother. Pearce’s mental anguish becomes truly unbearable when his life path crosses with Paul Harvey, a killer who escaped from prison.
