“One-Story America” is travel essays by Ilf and Petrov, the creators of the famous novels “Twelve Chairs” and “The Golden Calf.” In the autumn of 1935, the satirists were sent to the United States as correspondents for the newspaper “Pravda.” They drove across America from the Atlantic to the Pacific and back, and then, with their characteristic liveliness and sense of humor, recounted the journey in this book. Ilf and Petrov describe the life of small and big cities, the most beautiful landscapes—prairies, mountains, and national parks. They visit the White House and an Indian wigwam, tell about American celebrities and filmmaking in Hollywood, about rodeo, wrestling, and American football, about the creation of the light bulb, the phonograph, and the electric chair—and much, much more.
