“The New Inquisition” is Mikhail Zlobin’s novel, the first book of the eponymous cycle; urban fantasy and action fantasy. This story is about how society tries to coexist with gifted people who, because of unknown features, discovered in themselves the talent to control the energy of death. And everything would be fine, except that this small peculiarity corrupts the mind, pushing a person to commit horrifying and cruel acts. It makes them think they’re the pinnacle of evolution—someone more important than ordinary Homo Sapiens. For such individuals, people are just expendable material: raw material suitable only for creating death-servants and an easily accessible source of necro-ether. Therefore, an Inquisition was recreated to protect ordinary citizens: a militarized organization where the gifted serve—pumped up on hormonal drugs. A symbiosis of technology and magic turned them into real machines of destruction. But it’s not all rosy, because every fighter against the undead has to wage an internal battle as well—torn between the urges of a dark entity and their own duty.
