Nikolai Nikolaevich

Yuz Aleshkovsky’s novel “Nikolai Nikolayevich” is a novel-monologue of a certain criminal who, after getting out of prison, has settled in Moscow. It was his aunt who helped him—an extremely sociable woman, especially when it comes to men. And right around then, a law came into effect that toughened punishments for pickpockets (and our hero was exactly involved in that). So he had to find a job. And his aunt helped him with that, too. That’s how our narrator became a working researcher at an institute where, for those times, an unheard-of science was being studied—genetics.
