Fascinating, blood-raising, and adrenaline-sparking is the roar of an engine. Nothing special for our world, really. But not for the world into which our modern-day character, Petr Pastukhov, has ended up.
Here it is the mid-1920s of the same twentieth century, and steam reigns—despite the complete absence of internal combustion engines. Not going to call those pitiful attempts created by sorry enthusiasts with their modest resources “engines,” are we? Why “sorry”? Because anyone who tries to take a bite out of the steam engine monopoly risks losing their head at the hands of a secret club.
Nobody knows how all this would have turned out if Petr had known about it from the very beginning. But now he has no choice: either he will break the club’s backbone—or the club will roll over him like a heavy steamroller.
