A novel by American writer Norman Mailer, first published in 1948.
The plot is partly based on Mailer’s participation in combat with the 112th Cavalry Regiment during the Philippine operation in World War II. In 1958, a film of the same name was made based on the novel. In 1998, the Modern Library publishing house included “The Naked and the Dead” in its list of the 100 best novels of the 20th century in English, placing it at number 51.
The novel takes place on a fictional island, Anopopei, somewhere in the southern part of the Pacific Ocean. American troops take part in a campaign to liberate the island from the Japanese—after which they can enter the territory of the Philippines. The narrative focuses on events within one of the platoons commanded by Sergeant Croft, and a little later—by Lieutenant Hearn. Even though Mailer doesn’t write about the significance and details of the campaign, it is implied that this platoon, like all platoons in the U.S. Army, simply carries out orders without realizing exactly what those orders might be.
