Naum Sindalovsky's book collects proverbs, sayings, and puns whose origins are connected with St. Petersburg. Some of them date back to the earliest years of the city's existence, yet they are still current in the speech of Petersburgers today. Folklore offers us its own history of the city and its inhabitants, in which political and cultural events exist side by side with details of everyday life. Equally relevant to folklore, they characterize from various angles several epochs in the development of the state and of mass consciousness.
