In the middle of the forest stands an inn called “At the Busy Spot.” Its owner, Vukol Bessudny, receives guests by day and robs them at night on the main road, drugging them with a sleeping potion. When he leaves for nighttime work, his wife Yevgeniya Markovna takes a lover—the landowner Milovidov.
