An alternative history—familiar and unfamiliar events, strangely distorted by the imagination… A world where any folk belief becomes reality… Here, through the softened roads of medieval Germany—though not quite “alternative”—landsknechts and comedians, monks and witches, saints and sinners, the living and the dead roam. All of them try to follow their own path, and in the end they all end up on the same road. The novel is built like a medieval mystery, unfolding in almost real historical and geographic settings. The main hero is a monk whom the free-thinking student Balthasar Fichtele has nicknamed Mракобес (a “superstition-fanatic”). Will he find his way? Will he meet the One he has been searching for all his life?
