Shaw’s book tells about young men in World War II. At the core of its plot are the fates of three young men, two of them Americans, the third an Austrian. Accordingly, they find themselves on opposite sides of the barricades. Each is honest, talented, decent, and faithfully serves his cause. The heroes of the novel, each in his own way, experience a psychological struggle between a sense of duty and a personal understanding of justice.
One of the best books about war.
