The plot of the story “The Blizzard” was born while the writer was returning from the Caucasus to Yasnaya Polyana. The narration is in the first person. The main character sets out by sleigh into a dangerous, yet necessary journey during a fierce blizzard. Only by a miracle does he and his companion manage to avoid death.
The novella “Father Sergius” tells about an astonishing event that occurred in St. Petersburg during the reign of Nicholas I. A brilliant officer, Stepan Kassatсky, is planning to marry a noble and beautiful young lady, a lady-in-waiting of the empress—but suddenly he leaves the service, refuses a profitable marriage and a military career, and becomes a monk. The work is included in the secondary school curriculum.
The novella “The Morning of a Landowner” begins with the young prince Neхлюдов deciding to leave university and take care of how his serfs’ affairs are managed. Living on his estate, from the very first steps he encounters their lack of understanding and hostility: the peasants fear changes, because the master can’t be trusted. The novella reflects the author’s religious and moral struggles—he spent his entire life searching for answers to questions: what is good, benefit, and happiness for a person.
