In London, retired from the Criminal Police, Inspector Holt makes rosy plans for a trip to Monte Carlo—but then a mysterious murder of a Canadian millionaire occurs. On his return to the police department, Holt is met with a surprise: a new secretary, and “an extraordinarily capable person.” During the investigation, the inspector’s attention turns to a home for the blind (this is precisely “the Dead Eyes of London”), led by a blind pastor whose hobby is writing plays for the “Meadery Theatre.” It also turns out that the deceased millionaire, on the day of his death, managed to make out a will. Wallace’s book is in the best traditions of classic English detective fiction.
