The novel is devoted to the events of the Great Patriotic War, namely the defeat of the enemy’s Vitebsk grouping by Soviet troops in June 1944.

V. I. Klipel was an Honored Worker of Culture of the RSFSR, a member of the Writers’ Union, a veteran of the Great Patriotic War, and a holder of six military orders. V. I. Klipel was born on July 28, 1917, at the In station of the Far Eastern Railway. At the age of fifteen, immediately after finishing seven-year school, he went to work: as a picket man, draftsman, meteorologist. In 1937 he decided to become an artist and entered the Sverdlovsk Art School, but did not finish it — he was drafted into the army, where he served for 7 years from 1939 to 1946. He took part in the Soviet-Finnish War of 1939–1940 and in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945 (including participation in the war with Japan in the summer of 1945). For military merit, Guards Major Klipel was awarded two Orders of the Red Banner, two Orders of the Patriotic War, 1st class, the Order of the Red Star, the Order of the Patriotic War, 2nd class, and many medals.

Since 1946 he was married to his fellow soldier, Guards Lieutenant Maria. He had four children. He is the author of the WWII novels “Bear Rampart,” “Test of Loyalty,” “Soldiers of the Fatherland,” and “Confession,” which brought him fame. Vladimir Klipel is also the author of books about nature: “The Wilds,” “Diary of Summer Wanderings,” “Forest Patterns,” “The Smile of Dzhugdzhur,” “Calendar of Priamurye.” In 1992, V. I. Klipel was awarded the title “Honored Worker of Culture of the RSFSR,” and on May 22, 1995, the title “Honorary Citizen of the City of Khabarovsk.”
