Haggard describes how Odysseus, after yet another journey, returns to Ithaca and finds the island laid waste and Penelope dead. Odysseus meets Aphrodite, and she, knowing that Odysseus truly loved only Helen, while he loved Penelope with “lawful love, but not ardent passion,” sends him to search for Helen in Egypt, where she dwells in the guise of the goddess Hathor.
Aphrodite promises Odysseus that he must give his heart only to Helen, and to no other woman. Helen can be recognized by the star on her breast, from which red drops fall onto her dress and vanish. At parting Aphrodite says: “You shall know her by this star of love and swear to her your love and faithfulness. But if you, Odysseus, break your oath, then never in your life shall you see golden-haired Helen. You will die by water a quiet death! But before that you shall be in the arms of lovely Helen!”
