Yandash—an neon city—is the second capital of the small state of Sibolia right on the edge of the Celestial Empire. A place of pleasures and horrors, cybercriminals, underground doctors, and illegal data centers’ towers that rise into the sky like skyscrapers across the whole world. Here the territory is shared by the triads, the police, and international conglomerates—dividing power across wide avenues and crooked streets of the old city, in tunnel-like places reminiscent of an anthill and in the dark network of “Chrysanthemum.”
The Small Sichuan district never sees the sun. The sky here is dark from smog and drones moving between buildings. In a cold April night, from the window of her hotel room, a person falls onto the street for no apparent reason—someone who could make the entire Yandash his personal board game. All he leaves behind are a few strange notes about ghostly shadows and mechanical computers, traces in “Chrysanthemum,” and an empty human shell.
