“In the late afternoon of a December day in 1602, two riders were traveling along the roadside deep within an ancient Lithuanian forest.

One of them was a man of powerful build, broad-shouldered, dressed in a dark fur-lined caftan and a low sable hat that covered his forehead and ears. From the sash, a pair of carved handles of long-barreled pistols peeked out; at his side a sabre hung in velvet scabbard with silver crossguards. A long, wide golden beard fell onto his chest like a shovel. A careful observer might have noticed flecks of gray in that beard in places. But those grays were not “the silver of years,” because the rider’s face—beautiful, purely Russian in type—was young, though serious, almost sad…”
