In the early twentieth century, when pessimism had overwhelmed literature, Arkady Averchenko offered his satirical stories to the judgment of the wider public. But with his stories he was not simply trying to bring a smile to his readers. He lashed out mercilessly with humor at hypocrisy, vulgarity, stupidity, greed, pride, vanity, and other human vices. And despite the fact that a hundred years have passed since the stories were written, they have not lost their relevance. Because human folly has not gone anywhere — it has perhaps merely transformed somewhat.
