Description
James asked the stewardess to bring him some writing paper and an envelope. Into it he put a list of banknote numbers, copied from the wrappers that Marianne had scattered all over the living room—the serial numbers of each pack of hundred-dollar bills. Then he composed a note to Interpol: «This money was paid to Karl Langer’s killers.» He did not sign the note, but slipped it into the envelope together with the list of banknote numbers. As soon as this money starts appearing in circulation, Interpol will immediately begin looking for whoever is spending it. Either they will find Marianne, or she will learn that she is being hunted. Deep down, James hoped for the latter. Then she would have to lie low, with about a million dollars she would not be able to spend. Perhaps she would take them out of the closet and look at them.
