A well-known historical study by the outstanding Russian scholar Nikolay Ivanovich Kostomarov, one of the founders of the Russian historical school, is devoted to one of the most significant Russian commanders—Prince Vladimir Monomakh.
First in Russian history, he launched an offensive military campaign, repelled raids by nomadic peoples, and expanded the boundaries of the state. The glory of his victories spread far beyond Rus'.
In recognition of his achievements, the Byzantine emperor presented him with an imperial diadem—what would later become the Monomakh Cap, a symbol of supreme state power.
The events and facts set out by N. I. Kostomarov are included in school history programs for grades 6–11 in all variants of secondary education.
