The story of the world whaling industry lasted almost a century. People can see it in different ways. Some condemn the actions of whalers; others do not. What is certain is this: as a result of human actions, the planet’s largest animals were almost wiped out, and several species of whales were lost forever. Yet this industry also had its heroes—and even heroes of Socialist Labor!
This book tells about a contemporary person who, having been swept out of his time, ends up aboard a whaling ship at the height of the whale hunt, joining a friendly team of Soviet whalers. And it doesn’t matter whether you hate the sea—the shore awaits you only in eight months, when the season ends!
All coincidences are accidental; inaccuracies are intentional. I do not aim to rewrite word for word the entire glorious history of the flotilla described in the book. Consider this world as parallel to ours, and the plot entirely a work of fiction by the author.
