“The Stone Belt” is an epic canvas spanning the period of Russian life from the end of the 17th century to the 1870s. And although the core of the narrative is the history of the Demidov dynasty of Ural industrial magnates—from the shrewd blacksmith Nikita, the instigator of “the case,” to the weak and debauched with luxury Anatoly, Prince of San Donato, who brings the genealogy to a close—the main hero of the trilogy is the talented, hardworking Russian people, who gradually accumulate strength to fight the oppressors. The author created an entire gallery of memorable images of master craftsmen: Demidovs, too, are vividly shown—cruel, power-hungry, proud of their strength and their power over a human being.
