Young aristocrat Philippe de La grerie, heir to a family of White émigrés, arrives in Russia to unravel an old mystery. Even before the revolution, a young princess disappeared without a trace at the estate of Zarechye, and whoever digs out the truth is promised an immense inheritance. But the long-abandoned house has turned into gloomy ruins, about which ominous rumors circulate. Why do birds swarm here? Why did a deranged artist stretch resonating strings across the windows and corridors, like signals of uninvited guests’ steps? And who hides in the last fragment of a shattered mirror? In search of answers, Philippe gathers a group of investigators: each has a mystical talent that they themselves consider not a gift, but a curse.
