The collection includes the most famous odes of the ancient Roman poet Quintus Horace Flaccus in translations by outstanding Russian poets.
His poems show the influence of ancient Greek lyricism, yet they are so distinctive that they themselves became an example to imitate. Horace’s work was admired by poets such as I. Goethe, J. Byron, N. Boileau, A. S. Pushkin, A. A. Delvig—and sometimes they used his method of writing verse or the themes of his works (the famous “Monument” by A. S. Pushkin, etc.).
