The novel “Joshua” is a retelling and reinterpretation of the biblical parable of the exodus of the Jews from Egypt—an attempt to describe it from the point of view of the people who took part in it. What is more important—personal happiness, or faith and duty? How can a person take upon their shoulders responsibility for the fate of an entire people? What sacrifices can one make for the happiness and freedom of a loved one, what bargains with one’s own destiny?
