Description
In 1909, Gorky wrote the topical novella “The Town of Okurov,” thematically connected with the era of 1905.

“The Town of Okurov” can be called a book about the petty bourgeoisie as a social class, taken in all its complexity and variety, with all its contradictions: here you find prosperous petty bourgeois—mostly shopkeepers—and the poor of the free district, mainly factory workers, craftsmen, and artisans. The county town of “Okurov” reflected typical phenomena of Russian reality during the period of political reaction. In it there are many pictures that symbolize the overall state of tsarist Russia.
