“Mountain Nest” is a novel published in “Domestic Notes” in 1884, cementing Mamin-Sibiryak’s reputation as an outstanding realist writer. In the note to the first edition, Mamin-Sibiryak explained what “Mountain Nest” means. In the Urals, this was the name given to a community of state mining engineers. Under this title, the author brought together absolutely everyone who ran affairs in the Urals. A sharp satire about the insolvency of the “magnates” of the Ural mining plants as organizers of industry. The author depicted life in the Urals in the post-reform years, Russia’s capitalization, and the resulting breakdown of public consciousness, norms of law and morality.
