His sixth—and last—wife was luckier than all her predecessors: Catherine Parr managed to outlive her powerful husband, though she wasn’t once teetering on the edge of death.

After being widowed the second time, she was forced to appear at court as part of the suite of Henry VIII’s elder daughter, Mary Tudor. There Catherine fell in love with the handsome Thomas Seymour and hoped to marry him. But the king had plans of his own.
