The March issue of "Foreign Literature" opens with a novel by the Chilean writer Hernán Rivera Letelier (1950), "Fata Morgana of Love with Orchestra." The plot recalls a ballad or an urban romance: a heart-rending love story between the town's foremost beauty and a wayward trumpet player. It all ends, as it must, badly. The time is the 1920s–30s, the place — Pampa Unión, a seedy little town surrounded by saltpeter mines.
