Description
Charles Bukowski is the cult American writer of the 20th century whose popularity in Europe has always outpaced that in America (in Germany during his lifetime, the print run of his books exceeded two million). He is the author of more than forty books—novels, poetry, essays, and short stories. Despite sometimes shocking naturalism, his texts are full of lyricism, even a kind of distinctive sentimentality.

Who is a factotum? A person who does everything. Henry Chinaski has no choice, though. A perpetual wanderer, a perpetual traveler—an alter ego of the author—he is doomed to a painful search for himself.

In 1987, the novel was adapted for film by Barbet Schroeder under the title “Barfly.” Bukowski himself wrote the screenplay, and the leading roles were played by Mickey Rourke and Faye Dunaway.

In 2005, the film “Factotum” was released on screens, directed by the Norwegian director Bent Hamer.
