The novella Fabiola tells about the time when the Roman emperor Diocletian renewed the persecution of Christians. It was the last attempt of the pagan world to destroy the Church. The persecutions were cruel but short-lived: within just a few years Christianity would triumph in the Roman Empire.
The main heroine of the novella, Fabiola, a young noble Roman woman, comes to faith in Christ through painful trials and doubts. Having become a Christian, the Roman patrician devoted her wealth to works of mercy.
The author of the book, Nicholas Patrick Wiseman (1802โ1865), was a cardinal, Archbishop of Westminster, church figure, scholar, and writer. He did much in the field of church history. While working on the book, Wiseman used ancient traditions about martyrs and information drawn from the archaeology of the catacombs. This gives it historicity and documentary authenticity. The novella Fabiola was published in 1854 and brought Wiseman wide renown throughout the world.
