This is the story of a man whose life is tightly bound up with alcohol—John Barleycorn. The taste of alcohol is disgusting to the hero, but whether he is an oyster pirate, a simple worker in the States, or traveling along Japan’s shores, he has to deal with Barleycorn and consume it in huge quantities. No matter how disgusting the taste of alcohol is, it makes him come back again and again, and gradually a person gets used to this destructive habit. And to get rid of John Barleycorn’s “friendship” won’t be easy.
