We have a modified world of the late eighteenth century before us. On the Russian throne, it is still Empress Elizaveta Petrovna. In this world, instead of the Bering Strait, there is a land isthmus of the same name; carriages are pulled by mage-machanical horses; aristocrats possess magical talents, and their serfs are orcs, obediently performing barshchina.
It is to this kind of Russia that the magician-недоучка Konstantin Urusov travels from Paris to obtain an inheritance and restart a not quite successful career. Returning to historical roots turns out to be difficult. There are problems with the inheritance; to develop his magical gift, he will have to work at it; and it’s easy to end up on one of the duels that our hero is so “lucky” to get into.
In the seventh book, Konstantin Urusov’s adventures continue. After the death of Elizaveta Petrovna, he receives an offer to join a conspiracy in favor of Ekaterina Alekseevna—in order to bring her to power. The enterprise is dangerous, but if it succeeds it promises serious benefits, not to mention the personal safety of the hero, who is always in disgrace with Peter the Third. However, being a supporter of Ekaterina Alekseevna doesn’t mean staying safe. Old enemies also make themselves known, and with them he will have to deal: somewhere through cunning, and somewhere he’ll have to remember the duel code as well.
