Description
In the novel “Doctor Fischer of Geneva, or The Bomb Party,” the magnate Dr. Fischer conducts a peculiar experiment to find out the limits of greed and the extent of humiliation and danger people are willing to endure in order to receive luxurious gifts. Dr. Fischer is struck not by the predictable vices of his guests, since he knows well the peculiar nature and boundless appetites of rich people, but by the refusal of his daughter’s husband, a man of modest means, to take part in the mockingly imposed game. The ending of the novel is deeply ambiguous; the author wanted the reader, astonished by the unexpected conclusion, to reflect on a profound philosophical problem: what is the essence and meaning of human existence.
