Days and Nights

Konstantin Simonov’s novella is dedicated to one of the most important events of the Great Patriotic War—the Battle of Stalingrad. Units defending Stalingrad are reinforced by formations transferred from beyond the Volga, including the battalion of the story’s main hero, Captain Saburov. Soviet soldiers fiercely repel the attacks of the Hitlerites. Day after day and night after night, the heroic defense of several houses continues—houses that become impregnable to the enemy.

In an inferno of blood and ash, the tender love of the battalion commander Saburov and the young nurse Anya grows—love in which she risks her life day after day, pulling the wounded from the battlefield and ferrying them to the other bank of the Volga. The heroes do not spare themselves, but they dream of surviving to Victory. Many will not know that it is precisely in that time that a decisive turning point occurs in their sacred war against Nazi Germany.
