Description
Before the Revolution, Ilya Dmitrievich Surguchyov’s name (1881–1856) stood in the same line as Bunin, L. Andreev, and Kuprin—though it lacked such loud popularity. I.D. Surguchyov was born in Stavropol, graduated from the Stavropol Theological Seminary, and then from the Eastern Faculty of Saint Petersburg University; he mastered French, German, and several Eastern languages perfectly. The short story “The Governor,” plays “The Trading House” and “Autumn Violins” brought him a reputation as a promising author.

After the Revolution—which, like many other writers, he neither understood nor accepted—I.D. Surguchyov emigrated (in 1920) through Turkey and Prague to Paris.

1939. Juan-les-Pins. France declared war on Germany. On the seafront near the sea, the writer was introduced to a fellow countryman—a colonel Ollegreyn—and it was as a result of this that this book was created. It was published in Paris in 1953.
