First published in: “Otechestvennye Zapiski,” April 1848, under the title “Stories of an Experienced Man (From the Notes of an Unknown). I. The Retired Soldier. II. An Honest Thief.” While preparing the 1860 edition, Dostoevsky took only the first two pages from the first story, “The Retired Soldier”; added several phrases to connect those pages with the second story, and thereafter printed the text of “An Honest Thief” with minor changes. At the same time, the author omitted the final sentence of the 1848 text.
