“Don’t be afraid, I’m just a devil,” the black cat tells fifteen-year-old Chonin. “And today I’m off— I have a day off.”
From this meeting, the life of a poor schoolboy used to gray days begins to resemble a chain of inexplicable gifts from fate. The cat insists it only needs a rest from eternal service, and in gratitude it will fulfill any request the boy makes. Wishes come true one after another—and along with them reality changes: cracks appear in the world, something disappears, breaks, crumbles, as if every time the miracle takes its payment not only from Chonin. Gradually he realizes there’s a downside to this generosity—and he may have to pay more dearly than he first thought.
“Black Cat Offers a Deal” is a mystical parable about growing up, temptation, and responsibility for one’s choices. About how easy it is to grab hold of a promised miracle—and how hard it is not to lose yourself when the devil unexpectedly becomes your only friend.
