The world turned into an endless field of battle. We weren’t planning to surrender, and we learned to sell our lives as expensively as possible. But, just as my brother predicted, winter wiped out all the advantages. Humanity was melting away right before our eyes, and soon we went from an offensive to a deadlocked defense. Small groups of survivors hid behind fortress walls and gave the night to the degenerate ones. Now our life consists of short sorties for food and long nights of holding the line. I managed to survive all that filth. But what I became scares even me. Still, it turns out that something like that lives in each of us that shouldn’t be awakened—the primeval, all-consuming evil capable of sweeping everything off its path.
