In 1939, London is gripped by anxiety—Britain has entered the war with Hitler’s Germany, whose armies are tearing through Europe. The city is packed with refugees; the residents of the capital sign up as volunteers, prepare to clear rubble, and help evacuate civilians while awaiting air raids.
Young artist Francis Fawell returns to London after a trip through British colonies, where she successfully earned money by painting portraits of Indian rajas.
