Ivan Antonovich (Antipovich) Efremov (1908–1972) was an outstanding Russian Soviet science-fiction writer, a paleontologist, the creator of taphonomy (the scientific discipline that explains how and why the remains of extinct animals and plants are preserved), a cosmic philosopher, and a social thinker. Since the mid-1920s, his life has been shaped by expeditions—many of which have yielded valuable findings and discoveries.
The plot foundations of each story included in this collection are based on an ancient legend. During a storming assault of the inaccessible peak of the White Horn (and, at the same time, the heart of an unyielding colleague), the leader of a geological expedition is aided by the legend of a brave hero who conquered the rock three centuries ago. The investigation of old copper mines near Orenburg sheds light on dramatic events that took place here during the era of serfdom, shortly before its abolition. A found old ship lets a veil of mystery lift over sea voyages in the 18th century. The heroes of these stories—geologists, miners, sailors—teach us, through their thoughts and actions, to remain true to ourselves, not to abandon our dream, and not to be daunted by any difficulties. Listen to these fascinating and enlightening tales!
