Alphonse Daudet (1840–1897; pictured right) was a French novelist and playwright, author of vivid stories from the life of Provence. His play "L'Arlésienne" tells of the unrequited love of a naive village youth, Frédéri, for a brilliant but fickle woman from the city of Arles. He learns of his beloved's unfaithfulness.
It all began with a short sketch, "L'Arlésienne," which was later reworked into a full-length play. It subsequently became the most famous of Daudet's plays. The music for it was composed by Georges Bizet.
