In the labyrinth of collapsing buildings called the Old City, where desperate people live, there is a hospital with concrete walls that reflect the cries of wretched people locked inside.

In the hospital there is a woman. Her once light hair hangs in tangled clumps. She doesn’t remember why she ended up in this terrible place. Only a long-ago tea party, long ears, and blood...

But one night, a fire in the hospital gives the woman a chance to escape by jumping out of the hole that held her in captivity. A chance to uncover the truth about what happened many years ago.

Only the woman is not the only fugitive. Something else has gotten free. Dark. Powerful. And to learn the truth, the woman will have to chase this beast all the way to the heart of the Old City, where a rabbit waits for its Alice.
