5.34 Nina Veresova. Technology in the Fashion Industry

In this episode, we talk with Nina—someone at the intersection of design and research: a textile researcher and multidisciplinary artist, a clothing designer, lecturer, and teacher at the British Higher School of Design. She’s a PhD student at the Art and Design Graduate School of the National Research University Higher School of Economics and a participant of MendIt research lab. Nina studies textile art and design through the lens of “error”—its aesthetics, the value of imperfection, and how a defect can become an expressive technique.

We discuss what professions exist in the fashion industry besides clothing design; how Nina came into fashion through physics and math and law; why fashion isn’t only about things, but about cultural and artistic practices surrounding the body—and what role scholars and researchers play in this. We talk about materials and technologies—from textiles and bioplastics to experiments with kombucha—and what R&D branches of fashion houses and brands do, as well as futurism, ecology, recycling, and strong textile authors of the industry. We also focus on career trajectories for textile designers in fashion: how to learn this in the British academy without a big chemistry lab (through prototyping and practical implementation of ideas), and advice for listeners.
