An American, Bob Lee Swagger, and a Japanese man, Philipp Yano, are connected by one episode from the past—the moment when their fathers met in a bloody battle on the island of Iwo Jima in 1945. Only Swagger’s father survived.
Many years later, Philipp Yano asks Bob to return the officer’s sword of Hideki Yano—apparently the sword that ended up with the winner of that fight. After finding the sword, Bob flies to Japan to return it personally. Together they try to learn the past of this weapon, which turns out to be old and likely very valuable.
When Bob returns home, at the airport he learns from the news that the home of his new friend burned down and the whole family died. And the ancient sword has vanished without a trace.
